Hubert Seigmann the Wood Craftsman
The art of master woodworking goes back four generations in the Seigmann family. At the age of 14, Hubert carried on that tradition and left school to begin a wood working apprenticeship in Grödig which would last three years. The apprenticeship was with Hans Haas who owned Tischlerei Haas Master Wood Company. In 1978, Seigmann graduated from his apprenticeship and became a journeyman woodworker. The next year, he joined the Austrian Army under mandatory service. After his tour of duty was up, he went back to work at the Tischlerei Wood Company.
In 1988, three months after moving to Ruidoso, New Mexico from his native Austria, Seigmann founded his wood and furniture business. Strongly influenced by the old masters of Salzburgerland, Seigmann constantly looks for ways to improve his craft and add his touch to his wood projects. He has found many similarities between the carvings in the Southwest and techniques of the European wood workers. The early carvers were very likely inspired by Austrian colonists, who introduced their wood customs and designs after entering California and Mexico in 1864 with the Austrian born Maximillian I, the Emperor of Mexico.
Seigmann has done extensive design work in fine cabinetry, furniture, windows and doors. Richly carved tables, chairs, beds, chests and wardrobes are elegant in both design and workmanship. The surface finish is simple, consisting of custom stains treated with oils and waxes. Each piece take on a character all their own and like a fine wine, ages beautifully with time. Seigmann explains, "My vision is to create timeless pieces of furniture for a clientele who desires the quality and standards of the Old World masters." Seigmann has received an Austrian national award for his carving talent of the famous "Anifer-Krampus" masks used for the festivities on St. Nicholas Day. He has also been featured on the ORF Austrian national television network demonstrating his carvings and woodwork. Below are examples of Hubert Seigmann's workmanship.
